Bellows, George, 1882-1925 · 1921
In this portrait of his father-in-law, Bellows followed his frequent practice of pulling a sizable edition from an uncompleted stone. He then finished the work on the stone and had another edition of equal size pulled. In reworking the stone for the second state, Bellows raised and extended the sitter's left shoulder line. The small "GB" that appeared in the first state is still visible, next to the bolder pair of initials. This state is referred to as "W. E. Story, II Dark Coat" in the artist's record book. (Mason)
