Vacation Idea -- Those wondering how to spend a vacation might take a tip from Donald Shepherd. He’s using his leave from a South African gold mine to run from Los Angeles to New York. The 45-year-old bachelor, who styles himself an amateur, hopes to make the 3000-mile trip in 69 days, thereby shattering the existing 70-day record set by a pro in 1928. Shepherd, shown leaving Los Angeles today, plans to run some 45 miles a day, sleeping nights in motels.
