Theodore Carter, Jr., 18-year-old factory worker, is shown (center) escorted by law officers from Bridgton Jail on his way to Cumberland County Courthouse for the opening of his trial for the murder of Lorraine Hess, Milville (N.J.) high school girl last May. Miss Hess was strangled with the belt from her own coat. Carter was arrested on June 9 and police said he signed a confession. Sheriff William Riggin is at left above.
