Tropical Storm Hilda became a Hurricane 9/30, packing winds up to 80 miles per hour near the center. At noon, EDT, Hilda was centered about 450 miles south of Biloxi, Miss., moving west northwestward about 10 mph. A hurricane watch was advised for the entire Louisiana coast eastward to Mobile, Ala. Weathermen said it was still too early to speculate where the hurricane might strike.
