Tropical storm Debbie, steadily growing in intensity, 9/29 sent gale winds lashing the Mississippi and Alabama coasts and the weather bureau ordered a hurricane watch from Louisiana to Florida. The crew of a tug sinking in the northern Gulf of Mexico about 80 miles off the Louisiana Coast abandoned the vessel as Debbie churned closer and closer to them.
