This is the "Spare Heart"--This photodiagram identifies the main parts of the artificial heart and lung machine described today to the Ohio chapter of the American College of Chest Physicians meeting in Cleveland. The machine is enclosed in a glass case, 30 inches high, 16 inches wide and 18 inches deep. Blood from the patient's veins would flow through plastic tubes into the artificial lung cylinder where it would be purified and refreshed. Then the mechanical heart pump would take over, pulsing the blood through a plastic tube to the main artery. The machine was specially produced by the J.J. Ashton Co., a New York engineering development firm, in a joint project with Hahnemann Medical College and Drexel Institute of Technology.
