The gentleman in the photo is Bill Salkeld, acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates, who is sharing catching duties with Phil Masi. Salkeld was playing professional baseball for San Diego when he was 17 years old and had to hurry from school on his bike to get to the ball park in time to play in the Pacific Coast League games.
