[ca. 1861–1865]
From "War Memories" catalog: This ditch or "sunken road" was used by the Rebels as a rifle pit. A Union battery succeeded in getting an excellent range of this road, and slaughtered the enemy like sheep. This view of some of the dead just as they fell, is only a specimen of many groups of dead in that terrible trap, the "sunken road."
