Testing Out the New "Cannon Ball" Diving Bell. This new diving bell invented by W. D. Sisson, an American engineer, is being tested in Long Island Sound at New Rochelle. The Diving Bell is a Giant Sphere eight feet in diameter. The shell is of tough Vanadium steel, 1 1/4 inches in thickness, and weighs with the machinery inside, 6 tons. Two operators form the crew of the diving bell, and the air supply will last for 72 hours / On the front are huge magnets which draw the ball to the hull of the sunken ship.
