An interesting example of Greek Revival architecture, North Carolina's capitol at Raleigh, was completed in 1840 on the site of an earlier building that burned. It has served as the seat of state government under the flags of the United States, and between 1861-1865 of the Confederate States of America. The grounds are landscaped with 52 varieties of trees and flowering shrubs, and is open to visitors during state business hours.
