The work of building the Capitol was begun December 9, 1867, and Governor Black declared the Capitol practically completed on August 28, 1898. The building is constructed of solid granite and has cost for grounds, construction and repairs approximately $28,000,000. It contains three interesting staircases, the most ornate being the famous western staircase.
