George Bellows' studio, 146 East Nineteenth Street, New York. His first Christmas-card. (Bellows) / Having been happily married for six years, the proud father of Anne, five, and Jean, one, conveyed his domestic contentment in the earliest of the three Christmas cards in 1916. The top floor of Bellows' house at 146 East Nineteenth Street is the setting. It is a composite of various activities. A printer, probably George C. Miller, is seen working at the press, while the artist paints Emma, and the children play near the tree. A maid stands on the landing while Emma's mother, Mrs. Story, talks on the phone. A painting was made three years later that is almost identical to this lithograph--except that the children have grown. (Mason)
