Fantin-Latour, Henri, 1836-1904 · 1893
In the foreground, St. Anthony is on his knees in front of a small wooden cross planted in the ground. His book is open on the ground in front of him, and he stares fixedly at a skull that he is holds with both hands. Behind him are two figures of naked women. They illuminate the twilight landscape. The one on the left turns on a drapery that floats behind her. The other one kneels and presents a cup with one hand and pulls her drapery to her chest with her other hand.
