Ten-Second Shakedown. This is part of the destruction caused to the Hopkins Building in Bakersfield; Calif., by an earthquake which lasted for 10 seconds on Aug. 22, 1952. Almost the entire roof ledge fell to the street. Greatest damage was inside, to walls and ceilings. Today the building has been restored and strengthened. The quake and aftershocks left two persons dead, 32 injured, and 396 buildings damaged at a cost estimated at $48,650,000. Two years later reconstruction finds the city improved and growing in population.
