Turning on the Rain. Farming By Irrigation in the deserts of the West is something of which easterners have little intimate knowledge. Above we see this farmer on the Salt River federal reclamation project who depends entirely upon his canal for the success of his crop. His field must be carefully prepared and his water must be carefully tended, but he is not dependent upon fickle nature for his rain. He can tap the storage reservoir once in three or four weeks as water is needed. Below, is shown the farmer opening a head gate to divert a stream into the lateral canal which leads into his fields.
