Election of 1861. The Democratic candidate George B. McClellan is shown trying to prevent Abraham Lincoln, the Republican incumbent and Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederacy from tearing a map of the United States in two. The Democrats had adopted a "peace at any price" platform, which sought to preserve the Union. McClellan personally did not support this view but he was saddled with it all through the campaign. Lincoln won the election.
