His penchant for collecting wives brought Everett Welch into conflict with the law. He is shown (left) as he had a hearing on bigamy charges in Philadelphia today. The trouble began when Welch returned from his latest honeymoon and found detectives awaiting him. They had been summoned by the father of his third bride, Thelma Ganther, who had visited the home of his son-in-law to find another Mrs. Welch, not his daughter. Investigation turned up still another Mrs. Welch. The three wives are shown at right as they appeared at the hearing. Left to right are wife no. 3, Thelma Ganther Welch; wife no. 2, Mrs. Antoinette Pizzi Welch, and wife no. 1, Mrs. Augusta Owenby Welch, who has three children by Welch. Peering between wives no. 3 and no. 2 is Mr. Ganther.
