Tampa, Fla.: Kidney patient Joanne Macuzzi lies critically ill in Tampa General Hospital here 7/23 as doctors ponder whether to use an expensive artificial kidney machine in an attempt to save her life. The 23-year-old woman was transferred here from Sarasota last week/ Welfare officials, reportedly, have agreed to pay the cost, about $15,000 per year, for use of the machine, called a kidney dialysis unit which assumes the kidneys' functions of filtering impurities from the blood.
