At one time a large industry, being founded in 1841 by M. Gustave Renouard a Frenchman. Years ago as many as 600 schooners and sloops of from three to thirty tons, and 6,000 men were employed in gathering sponges: the voyage lasted from five to eight weeks. The cargoes were sold at Nassau at the Sponge Exchange.
