Maria Calderon, 15, a foreign student from Manila, Philippines, scans a reading textbook as her instructor Dr. Florence Schale, director of reading improvement at Northwestern University's evening division school in Chicago, observes her pupil. Maria was reading about 250 words per minute with 90 per cent comprehension when she started the course. Now, five weeks later, she reads more than 50,000 words per minute with nearly 100 per cent comprehension.
