Bellows, George, 1882-1925 · 1917
At the Y.M.C.A., Fifty-seventh Street, New York City. (Bellows) / Humoresque of the Business men's class at the YMCA. Bathing after the gymnasium. -GB The first of the YMCA prints was "Business-Men's Class" (M. 20). "Shower-Bath" is the second and is one of the first to show a group of nudes, though they are modestly draped. Bellows' fascination with the human body from the point of view of the artist as well as the athlete enabled him to explore both the glorification of the physique of the professional athlete, and the humorous aspects of the sedentary businessman's conscientious body-building ritual.
