A sharp rolling earthquake, centered in Los Angeles area, shook southern California early 2/9, causing temporary power failures, knocking out windows and emptying home cupboards. At least two persons died when a downtown building collapsed partially and some 36 persons have been hospitalized. The quake was felt 200 miles to the north Fresno in the San Joaquin Valley and 130 miles south to the Mexico border. UPI newsman spots area where tremors struck.
