Gallery›Digital Commonwealth — Boston Public Library›Pulp Mills Resume Production. Quebec, Canada -- Pulp and paper products, Canada's major industry, is returning to post war production and lumberjacks are sweeping rivers and streams in the drive to restore the country's export trade. Before the war, Canada produced newsprint that made up two-thirds of the world's export trade of this commodity. During the war the 108 mills operated by 82 companies were converted to the production of military goods made on a 24-hour day schedule. This year's pulp log drive is of record proportions. Since Spring, rivers and streams have teemed with activity as millions of logs were driven down to mills for processing. Here, log jams are broken with dynamite in the Desert River in the Gatineau District.
