San Juan, P.R.: Heavy rains in the wake of a tropical depression had already ;eft calf-high waters on this flooded San Juan street shown during the early days of the flood, but the rain continued pouring, and by 10/9, had dumped as much as 33inches of water on the island. More than 35 persons were believed dead as of 10/9 and damage estimates soared past the $50 million mark as the flood waters kept rising.

Lincoln, Neb. -- Big Trophy For Massachusetts Skater Shirley Sanderson of East Weymouth, Mass., and her skating coach, Dick Gori, held trophies earned by Miss Sanderson as winner last night of the novice ladies single title in the American Amateur Roller Skating Championships. She holds the conventional winner's trophy in her left hand. The big trophy is a new award, the Aunt Elsie Memorial Trophy, honoring the memory of the late Mrs. Ed Kempf of St. Petersburg, Fla., long associated with the annual championships. The roller skating competition continues through Sunday.
