From back of item: Socrates, Greek philosopher and divine teacher was born 469 b. C. In 399 b. C. he was convicted of denying the gods recognized by the state and corrupting the young. Serving thirty days imprisonment, he drank the "Cup of Hemlock" after having refused an escape from prison, which was arranged by his friend Crito.
