Fantin-Latour, Henri, 1836-1904 · 1887
In the same great hall of the Capitol, which formerly had seen him all-powerful, Rienzi is now abandoned by all. He has been excommunicated and awaits death. He prays to God. He is on his knees on the flagstones, and faces the spectator, wearing a large cloak. On the left, behind him, his sister Irene approaches. Through the glass of the window, we can see the triumphal arch of Septimius Severus standing out from the flames of fire.
