Bellows, George, 1882-1925 · 1918
War series. (Bellows) / Belgian slaves being shipped back and dumped, broken in health and useless for further exploitation by their German masters. A man has fallen exhausted and is being kicked a guard. -GB The December 1918 issue of "Everybody's Magazine" carried the eleventh installment of a series by Brand Whitlock, then the American minister to Belgium, entitled "Belgium: The Crowning Crime." The accompanying illustration was captioned, "The Return of the Useless, cartoon by George Bellows," and is nearly an exact reversal of the lithograph, with a few minor variations. This print appeared a month after the signing of the armistice, and was probably the final print of the War Series. (Mason)
