Satire. Our first approach to the war. (Bellows) / "Prepare, America!" and "Hail to Peace" (M. 68) bracket the War Series. A believer in the basic goodness of humanity, Bellows did not believe that a world-wide disturbance could possibly reach his beloved country. His attitude--"it can't happen here"--led him to satirize patriots like this stylish do-gooder pinning a button on a rather awkward looking young man; the war effort had started. (Mason)
