Reynolds, Joshua, after
Mezzotint portrait on paper of Mary Bertie (née Paton) (1753-1793), Duchess of Ancaster and Kesteven, engraved by John Dixon (1710-c.1711) and published by William Wynne Ryland (1733-1783) in London between 1765 and 1771; proof state before lettering. It is a copy of a painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792) then in the collection of the Marquess of Cholmondeley, at Houghton Hall. The ships in the background likely allude to the turbulent voyage taken by Queen Charlotte to England in 1761. She was accompanied by the (pregnant) duchess in her role as Mistress of the Robes.
