From "War Memories" catalog: The army carried its bridges with it, ready to instantly replace such of the regular bridges as were destroyed by the enemy. The army bridges were made of pontoon boats, like this, which were anchored in the river in a line, parallel with the current, so as to form a foundation for the timbers and road-bed.
