Gallery›Digital Commonwealth — Boston Public Library›Pittsfield, Ohio – Monument Stands Alone – The base of the Civil War monument is all that stood intact in the tiny cross-roads town of Pittsfield after a tornado slammed into the community last night. Nine persons died in the town of 50, a dozen homes were demolished, along with two churches and the city hall, which formerly stood behind the statue. The one house that was not demolished was picked up and moves 50 feet from its foundation. Lying at the base of the monument is the figure of the Civil War solider that was toppled from the stand.
