Mrs. Violet Smith, 65, assists a mining crew in pushing a loaded coal car from the mine entrance. The six-foot, 180-pound Violet puts in a full day helping to operate the family coal mine at Hay Gulch, Colo. Last November an inspector for the U.S. Bureau of Mines ordered the Smith mine closed down because of safety problems. Mrs. Smith hauled the inspector from his car and, as she put it, "give him a few."
