Picture shows the navy's specially constructed diving bell or rescue chamber about to be lowered from the deck of the naval tug Falcon to the submerged submarine S-4 in Great Salt Pond, off Block Island, R.I. on July 16. The ball was lowered three times and each time men from the submarine entered the bell. In 55 feet of water and were hauled in safety to the surface. The bell is connected by air and telephone lines to the submerged ship and the contact is accomplished by three men from within the bell. Escape from the submarine is by means of a hatch.
