Construction begun in 1839. Many historic events took place here. In 1847 the famous Dred Scott slavery case came to trial. Veterans returning from the Mexican War were honoring in the rotunda. A national convention to project a railroad to the Pacific was held here. Carl Wimar's famous murals decorate the dome.
