Nephew of KKK Founder Recalls Its Beginning-Joe Tom Kennedy,78, nephew of the Ku Klux Klan’s first grand dragon, says his uncle, John Booker Kennedy, never mentioned the terrifying organization. Kennedy and five Confederate army buddies founded the Klan simple as a fun-making club, and didn’t plan on its becoming an instrument of terror. At right is the house where the six held their first meeting in 1865, after deciding to form the Klan.
