On the left are precipitous cliffs, crowned by the city of Orvieto. Beneath the rocks two roads converge, one of which mounts under olive trees from the distant valley, while the other, more open, with oxen carts upon it, passes on the left under a mass of masonry over which a man is leaning. Beyond the cultivated plain we see a distant range of hills. A large space of the side of the rock on which sunlight falls is entirely white; the distant hills end 35 mm. from the right end of the plate, and the work, though far advanced, i.e. unfinished in several places.
