Modern Pioneers Launch Log Cabin Community. Spurred on by economic conditions, eight hardy families; reverting to the pioneer instincts of their fore fathers; have begun a log-cabin cooperative community on the edge of a wilderness that flanks the Daniel Webster Highway in this section. Among the contributing factors which led the twentieth century pioneers to strike out for themselves were high rents; cramped play room for children and lack of farming space. The cabins, built by the settlers themselves at a cost of less than $400; are constructed of pine; with clear maple and white birch flooring. All the timber supply is taken from the surrounding woods. The original cost of the land; about $60 an acre, and materials not available from natural sources constitute the outlay for what members of the community describe as "comfortable homes." Photo Shows: Mr. and Mrs. Burton Smith, one of the colony's youngest couples, at work on their log-cabin home, which they expect to have ready before the first snowfall. It is here that they will celebrate their first wedding anniversary in January, and later cultivate the acre of land surrounding it.
