Big and dangerous Hurricane Gladys raised its aim slightly 9/19 to point 125 mile per hour winds at the North Carolina coast. At 6 P.M. EDT, Gladys was centered about 640 miles east of Vero Beach, Fla., and an equal distance southeast of Wilmington, N.C. It was moving northwestward at 6 MPH.

Lovely Linda Laughlin, Sturbridge Village hostess, holds a century-old whale oil "sparking lamp." The tiny inspired the expression "sparking" for petting in New England villages more than a century ago. The lamp burned just a little bit of oil and shed a tiny spark light on courting couples in early 1800s.
