Oldest Fossil Plants Discovered. These are micro-photographs of fossils of primitive plants which Harvard University scientists said today (Feb. 16) are nearly two billion years old the oldest yet uncovered in the world. They were found embedded in flint rock near Schreiber, Ontario, Canada. Top photo shows fossil of an algae magnified 725 times. The filament, black mass in center, is surrounded by fossil of the sheath. Lower photo is of a fungal magnified 1025 times. The spore (arrow) is attached to a long filament (hypha). Surrounding material in both photos is sediment.
