From back of item: A noble temple of Athena Parthenos at Athens, standing on the Acropolis, built by Pericles about 438 b. C. There were 46 columns in its peristyle. It stood almost entire until 1687, when, during a siege by the Venetians, a large part of the central portion was destroyed by the explosion of some gun powder stored in it by the Turks.
