New Diving Bell-- A new type of diving bell developed by the International Underwater Research Corp. of Providence, R.I., waits aboard a lighter at Newport Shipyard, for the start of an eight-hour dive in about 130 feet of water scheduled to be made this afternoon to demonstrate its capabilities. The six-foot tall cylinder will carry two-man crew and has been designed to reach a depth of 1000 feet, primarily for salvage operations. The bell was tested yesterday in 15 feet of water and will make its deeper demonstration dive this afternoon in the East Passage of Narragansett Bay off Jamestown Island.
