Above is jack w. shaffer who is held by chicago police in connection with the death of his step-daughter, four-year-old lettie joyce weir, whose mother, mrs. marie shaffer, is at right. lettie died, police charge, as the result of a beating and immersion in a bathtub of water. lettie's three-year-old brother, tommy, also was the victim of a beating and ducking. shaffer said the children "annoyed him".
