Mysterious Hurricane Gladys matured into a powerful storm with 125 MPH winds 9/17 and struck out toward the mainland with increased speed. The Washington and Miami weather bureaus couldn't understand how the storm grew so fast and are sending out a hurricane plane to take a closer look. At last report, Gladys was 974 miles slightly south of due east from Miami and moving toward the west-northwest at 12 MPH. The forecast said it would continue that course at least through Friday.
