Joseph has been excommunicated from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints--the Mormon Church--for polygamy. So have many others, including fundamentalist Mormons who believe they adhere to the church's most holy principles. There's no accurate census of polygamists in the western United States, Mexico and Canada, but authorities generally agree on estimates of between 25,000 and 35,000.
