Joe is the oldest lamplighter in Washington, he has lighted 924,000 lamps during his twenty-one years as a lamplighter and has walked more than 19,500 miles. Down the quiet streets he hastens, racing against darkness, pausing but a second at each lamp before hurrying on to the end of his pathway of light.
