Miami: Hurricane Betsy rapidly gained destructive power 9/1 on a course toward the Bahama Islands and forced weather scientists to cancel plans to chemically bombard the storm to weaken its force. Storm was located early 9/1 only 250 miles east and due north of Turks Island on the eastern tip of the Bahamas. The storm regained intensity of winds of 80 mph and began moving west at a slow six mph.
