Miami: Hurricane Betsy, a “large and dangerous” hurricane that was still growing, boiled slowly toward the Carolinas coast with 135-miles-an-hour winds 9/4 and the Red Cross rushed to set up emergency shelters. The beaches of North and South Carolina, normally jammed with tourists on a Labor Day weekend, were relatively empty.
