West German yachtswoman Mrs. Edith Baumann, the only female contestant in the Plymouth, England, to Newport, R.I., single-handed yacht race, messaged 6/26 that her 39.4-foot sloop Kaola III broke up and sank heavy gales caused by Hurricane Brenda. A spokesman at the U.S. Air Force base here said that her message was picked up in the Azores and she described her position as 290 miles due north of Lajes Field in the Azores. She said she and her pet dog Schatz were drifting in a rubber raft.
