West German yachtswoman Mrs. Edith Baumann (shown with her pet dog, Schatz, in a photo made here in late May), the only female contestant in the Plymouth to Newport single-handed yacht race, messaged 6/26 that her sloop had sunk and she was drifting with her dog Schatz in a black rubber raft in the mid-Atlantic. Aircraft and ships were searching the area where she was last sighted 6/23 -- some 300 miles north of the Azores. Her craft broke up under heavy pounding from Hurricane Brenda.
