Men engaged in one of the most hazardous tasks, that of deep-sea diving, are given a very rigid test and training before they undertake their jobs. This photo taken in London shows a demonstration of the use of a compression chamber. If a diver comes up too quickly from a great depth he is afflicted with Caisson disease which may well prove fatal-as it is a type of paralysis-unless instantly treated. He is put into this chamber under an air pressure equal to that at the lowest depth to which he has been and the pressure is then very gradually decreased. In most cases this treatment restores the diver to normal health.
